Mood Foods and How They Affect Your Diet

We have all done it... what am I talking about?   Eating when we are unhappy or depressed or sad.  We always tend to eat the wrong things at that!  So I am about to reveal some foods that put you in a good mood, and also tell you about the ones to steer clear off.

The body cannot produce tryptophan, this is an amino acid which is converted by the body into serotonin, so unless we get enough through our diets, we may suffer a deficiency, leading to low serotonin levels.
Low serotonin levels are associated with mood disorders, anxiety, cravings and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).  SO eating the following foods will help improve your serotonin levels amongst other things.

Top 10 Good Mood Foods
mung beans
• lobster
• turkey
• asparagus
• sunflower seeds
• cottage cheese
• pineapple
• tofu
• spinach
• bananas
Others include my favourite - dark chocolate, chicken, tuna, nuts and oats.

Foods to avoid when feeling low -
The following foods tend to make you sluggish and do not really add value nutrient wise.
  • Avoid fatty foods, or fried foods
  • Diet Drinks or fizzy drinks
  • Fried Foods
  • Junk Food
  • Artificial sweeteners

A few tips:
  1. Eat a diet that includes plenty of raw fruit and vegetables, soybeans (nice snack) and soy products, whole grains, seeds, nuts (seeds and nuts a great snack to carry around with you when you’re peckish), brown rice, a diet that is too low in complex carbs can cause serotonin depletion.
  2. If you are feeling nervous and want to relax, eat more complex carbs, for increased alertness protein meals containing essential fatty acids eg: salmon and white fishes; turkey and salmon are high in tryptophan and protein.
  3. Avoid diet drinks and artificial sweeteners, aspartame has been claimed to block the formation of serotonin and cause headaches, insomnia and depression.
  4. Avoid foods high in saturated fats, meat and fried foods, eg: hamburgers and french fries, they can lead to sluggishness, slow thinking and fatigue.
  5. Try and avoid alcohol, caffeine and processed foods.
  6. Keep your mind active, try and get some rest and exercise

Hope you have found this information useful, happy eating!

IPhone Apps- Can They Aid Your Weight Loss?

Well what can I say.  About a month ago I upgraded my cell phone to an iphone 4 and was amazed at all the different 'apps' or for those of you not in the know 'apps' is short for applications.
More and more on television, on radio and even at the cinema they are advertising iPhone apps for users to use in day to day life.

I searched on my iphone 4 for  weight loss 'apps' and was amazed to find a variety of paid and unpaid ones which can aid weight loss.  Off course you still have to make and effort to eat the right foods and exercise, but some of these apps can help you with your calorie counting and exercise 'burn' rate.

Using these apps does not mean you do not need nutritional expert advice, they should be used as 'aids'.  Consultation with a GP and with a Nutritionist is advisable before using any such app to improve your weight loss or health.

So here goes, here is my top 10 iphone 4 apps to aid weight loss...

1.
Nike Training Club

If you want to lose weight , tone up, build muscle this is a great app which you can use without weights, and is my personal favourite.  This is a FREE app which you can download from the APP Store.  It is also available on Android here ..
The workouts are hard and make you sweat, and you do see the results in a short period of time. I love using this app at home, in the park and with the LFGC members.

2.
My Fitness Pal -
This is a great app which is also available on iphone, Android and Blackberry you can input your daily food intake, as it has a calorie counter.  It can also scan the electronic labels of the foods you eat, saving you time and effort recording carbs, fibre, protein amounts etc. You can also add your weight and measurements and it will keep a track of how you are getting on.

3. My Net Diary
Another great app available on Android, Blackberry and iphone platforms. This app has a large range of the most popular diets going, and you can tailor your diet to your personal preferences so this gives you the best chance for long-term success.

4. Pedometer
You know you need to do your 10,000 steps per day dont you?  Yes this is a great FREE app, although there is a paid version which has more extended features.  It is a great tool to have you can set the speed to walking, running indoor or outdoor. Tells you calories used as well as the distance travelled.

5. GPS Motion x
Great app for  outdoor enthusiasts and makes a great addition for walking, jogging, cycling, skiing, sailing, kayaking, this not only has a pedometer, it also saves the route you take as 'tracks' with the mileage and time taken.

6. All-In-Yoga
If you love yoga then this is the app for you. You can get this for your ipod, ipad as well as your iphone. If you have never tried yoga you can also find this gentle and useful.  Great for stretches and for meditation.

7. Mi-Meals Planner
If you are busy and find it hard sticking to a healthy eating program, this is great for keeping you on track. Planning is essential to any weight loss campaign so check out what this app can do for you.

8.Weight Loss Tips is another great app as this gives you motivation and great advice to help keep you on track.  I could not find a link for this so you will have to look it up on Android and Iphone.

9. Fitness Pro
This app has a long list of workouts for weights and cardio exercises for all areas of the body.   It also shows you a demo of how to do the exercises correctly so as not to cause injury.  From beginners to Advanced.

and finally .....

10.Lose It
A FREE app.  Helps you stay on track each day by recording your food and exercise and staying within your budget. The average active Lose It! user has lost more than 12lbs and more than 85% of our active users have lost weight.

Hope you enjoy your workouts and yes the mobile phone apps can really help with your weight loss and fitness.  I know because I use them... :)

Weight Loss- Why Am I Not Losing My Weight?

So,you want to lose weight, your eating rabbit food 7 days a week, and your kind of doing some exercise, but somehow your weight does not seem to be coming down.

Ok, let's be serious, you have been steadily losing weight over the last month or two or possibly more, then all of a sudden your weight seems to stubbornly refuse to go beyond a certain point on the scale.

This is known as reaching a 'plateau'.  This is more common than most people think.  So how do you get beyond your plateau?

Quick Tips To Come Off That Plateau
  • First off, are you drinking enough water? Water is really important and helps with the weight loss process. If you donot ingest enough water your body actually holds on to the water, therefore you can appear to be bloated, or not to lose weight as fat needs water to break it down.
  • Adjust your calorie intake.  Too often when clients first go on a weight loss program, they stick to the same calorie intake from day one, you should be constantly adjusting your calorie intake as you lose the weight.
  • Remember your body is a clever complicated piece of equipment.  It calculates how much calories you need to maintain your 'normal state', which encompasses, breathing, moving, eating, digestion etc and then balances the energy needed to do all those things with the energy you are using when you exercise or do other things.
  • Step up the exercise routine, too often your body quickly assesses how much calories you are eating and using, and then addresses the body fat burning process accordingly. That is what makes us humans so unique.  So in order to fool your body, burn even more energy than you are consuming.  Do some intense exercising to increase the 'burn' rate which in turn will aid fat reduction.
  • Add more fibre to your program. Fibre is responsible for breaking down fat, adding extra fibre to your program will help to break your plateau, as well as helping to break down fat, it will help to make the digestive system run smoothly if you are feeling sluggish.
So use these tips and break that plateau.

Dangers of Fizzy Drinks

If you don't believe how much damage fizzy drinks do to you, you need to watch this video and take action..

It was mentioned on the video that there are a few tips you can do if you need to have 'fizz' in your drinks. You may want to mix fruit juice with soda water or fizzy spring water, this will give a carbonated effect without so much sugar.

On a personal level, tell me how much fizzy drinks do you drink on a daily basis? Do you feel any side effects? If you or your family have suffered from the side effects of fizzy drinks why not share them below in the comments box.

Business Review of Nutronix International - Nutrition Company

Today's business review is about a nutritional company called Nutronix International. I am in no way associated with this company and am writing this review purely from an objective and neutral basis.
The company was founded in 1999 by Bob Bremner, John Moates and Harrison Nesbit. Nutronix International is a vitamin and supplement distribution company They are currently doing business out of Virginia where they have their main offices and a warehouse.
They currently have over 16 thousand independent distributors and have a presence in over eighty countries. Part of Nutronix's growth is due to their effective internet marketing campaign, which is attributed to the business opportunity they call Automatic Builder. This allows members to distribute products with he aid of an automated website.
