Detox Preparation - Getting The Most Out Of Detoxing

Now is the time of year to start thinking about detoxing. All the rich creamy and fatty foods eaten during the festive season have left many of us feeling bloated and overweight.  To get your body prepared for the January weight loss we normally go through, it is best to start with a gentle detox first.

Benefits of Detoxing:
1. Cleanses the colon of fatty foods that have stuck to the insides
2. Gets rid of toxins within the body
3. Improves digestion within the gut
4. Energises the body leaving you feeling refreshed
5.Increases blood flow and absorbtion of nutrients into the body
6. Helps to keep you 'regular'.

There are many more benefits too numerous to mention, but above are some really beneficial ones.

So, what does detoxing involve:
Well, first of all the point of detoxing is to get rid of toxins inthe body, therefore in order to aid the expulsion of these toxins, we need to eat foods that do not take long to digest, and foods that the body can digest quicker and easier.  Therefore no process foods, red meats, cakes, biscuits or pastas, rice or takeaways, rich creamy sauces etc.

Cave Man Dieting Method - what to eat!
We are going to take it back to 'cave man diet'.  What is this you may ask, well its about eating fresh fruit, raw vegetables or lightly steamed vegetables, nuts and grains.  Back in the days of the cave man, it was a simple diet, and meat was rarely eaten, if they did, they had to hunt for possibly days to find the meat and this would have involved a chase so plenty of exercise!

By cleansing the body of complex processed foods can help to get your digestive system running at its optimum best. Think of your body as a Ferrari, it needs the highest grade fuel in order for it to run at its optimum best, if you but diesel oil into a Ferrari, it will run sluggishly and slow and possibly blow up the engine!  So, having fresh fruit, vegetables, grains and nuts are the high grade fuel our body needs to run at its optimised best.  However, the way in which are foods are grown today do not give us as much vitamins and nutrients as they did say 20 or 30 years ago.  Food is grown amongst pesticides, chemicals and pollution, along with the fact that they are then 'processed' in some what to preserve their longevity in the stores from the place where they are harvested.  That is why it is important that we also supplement our diet with vitamins.

I will go into supplementation in another blog post, but for now the main vitamins we will need for our detox is as follows:
Aloe Vera Drink- this is good for cleansing and aiding digestion inthe gut
Flora Fibre - this contains good bacteria that the gut needs, because when we detox good and bad bacteria can be depleted from the body.
Fibre & Herbs - Fibre & Herb is high in soluble fibre which helps to optimise your digestive health by supporting the body’s natural elimination of waste and toxins.

All of the above vitamins can be purchased from my Herbalife shop http://healthyweightloss.herbalcoach.com and if you purchase through my shop you will get a 10% discount applicable for members who sign up for our 10 day detox programme today.

How To Control Your Cholesterol Levels

Cholesterol is a fatty substance which is found in the blood. It is mainly made in the body. Cholesterol plays an essential role in how every cell in the body works. However, too much cholesterol in the blood can increase your risk of heart problems.

Cholesterol is carried around the body by proteins. These combinations of cholesterol and proteins are called lipoproteins. There are two main types of lipoproteins:
  • LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is the harmful type of cholesterol.
  • HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is a protective type of cholesterol.
Having too much harmful cholesterol in your blood can increase your risk of getting cardiovascular disease. The risk is particularly high if you have a high level of LDL cholesterol and a low level of HDL cholesterol.

TIPS FOR LOWERING CHOLESTEROL

The main goal of cholesterol-lowering treatment is to lower your low-density lipoprotein (LDL) level enough to reduce your risk of having a heart attack or diseases caused by hardening of the arteries.

In general, the higher your LDL level and the more risk factors you have, the greater your chances of developing heart disease or having a heart attack. (A risk factor is a condition that increases your chance of getting a disease.)
There are two main ways to lower your cholesterol:
  • Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) - includes a cholesterol-lowering diet (called the TLC Diet), physical activity, and weight management. TLC is for anyone whose LDL is above goal.
  • Drug Treatment - if cholesterol-lowering drugs are needed, they are used together with TLC treatment to help lower your LDL.
The higher your risk for heart disease, the lower your LDL goal will be. Your doctor will set your LDL goal.

Lowering Cholesterol With TLC

TLC is a set of lifestyle changes you can make to help lower your LDL cholesterol. The main parts of TLC are:
  • The TLC Diet, which recommends:
    • Limiting the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol you eat.
    • Eating only enough calories to achieve or maintain a healthy weight.
    • Increasing the soluble fiber in your diet. For example, oatmeal, kidney beans, and apples are good sources of soluble fiber.
    • Adding cholesterol-lowering food, such as margarines that contain plant sterol or stanol esters that lower cholesterol for some people.
  • Weight management:
    • Losing weight if you are overweight can help lower LDL. Weight management is especially important for those with a group of risk factors that includes high triglyceride and/or low HDL levels and being overweight with a large waist measurement (more than 40 inches for men and more than 35 inches for women).
  • Physical activity:
    • Regular physical activity is recommended for everyone. It can help raise HDL levels and lower LDL levels, and is especially important for those with high triglyceride and/or low HDL levels who are overweight with a large waist measurement.

Merry Christmas
to all our LFGC Followers

Now its tempting to over eat during the season especially if you are visiting family or friends and there are lost of delicious dishes to eat.  So, here are some of my handy tips that will help you keep your calories in check.

1. Drink a glass of water before you eat a meal or snack - this fills you up and therefore you will not be tempted to eat as much.
2. Eat a handful of MUFAS before you eat your main meal, things like cashews, half an avacado pear,  a square of dark chocolate. This will help to burn belly fat. These items are good fats which will burn viscal fat.

The Party Season Has Begun

It is now D Day minus 5 to go to the big Xmas Festivities.  This is the time of year when you want to look hot for the office party.  But, did you prepare for this?  So often than not we intend to but some of us cant seem to get over the temptation of snacks, buffets and extra Christmas foods during the weeks running up to Christmas.

Over the last 6 weeks I had been running a detox and weight loss challenge which has been very successful. Over 120pounds have been lost by a group of ladies and gentlemen who wanted to get in shape before Christmas.

Now what can you achieve in the next 5 days? Not very much I am afraid, unless your going to run a half marathon and burn up more than 5000calories for the day...
No,I didn't think any of you would go that far.  So for now, reduce your carbs in the evening time, no bread, cakes or anything with flour. Only have 1 meal a day and replace the other two meals with a shake supplement.

Dr David Heber has a great book out which looks at a 14 day total weight loss plan using Herbalife Products and low GI foods.  Check this out now and don't forget to order your products using the link below. All orders complete before the 31st December will get a 10% discount as well as two free consultation sessions with me to put together your personalised plan.

Radiotherapy And Side Effects On Nutrition

Radiotherapy, or radiation therapy, is commonly used for the treatment of cancer and uses high energy x-rays or other types of radiation to damage cancer cells so they are unable to multiply.

There are two types of radiotherapy:
  • the external radiotherapy uses a machine outside the body to send radiation toward the tumour. The machine, a linear accelerator, is located at a certain distance from the body and directs its radiation bundle in the specific body region affected by the tumour. During the treatment, cancer patients can have a normal life without any radiation contamination risks for others;
  • the internal radiotherapy uses a radioactive substance sealed in needles, seeds, wires or catheters that are placed directly into or near the malignant tissue. The internal radiotherapy requires that cancer patients stay isolated until the radioactive substances are naturally eliminated.
Radiotherapy can cure some cancers and reduce the risk of the cancer returning after it has been removed by surgery. It is also used to reduce the symptoms of cancer.
Radiotherapy may be used alone or in combination with surgery or chemotherapy. Before surgery, radiotherapy is useful to shrink a tumour while, after surgery, the treatment helps destroy any cancer cells that may remain in the area.
Because radiotherapy inhibits growth and division of all types of cells, normal and malignant, it can affect healthy cells in the treatment area, and side effects may occur. Generally, side effects can be:
  • acute, generally appearing at the beginning of the treatment and easing off or gradually disappearing at its end;
  • delayed, appearing also after the treatment and, generally, more severe.
These side effects are unavoidable, depending mostly on the radiation dose and the part of the body that is treated. They can be controlled with specific medical treatments and may be helped by appropriate nutrition support and changes to the diet.
If you have any of these side effects or are worried about the side effects of radiotherapy talk to your doctor or radiotherapy unit staff.

Why Chilli’s Can Help You To Lose Weight

Benefits:
Today we are going to look at Chilli’s, in the main associated with being hot, and burning our tongues or roofs of our mouth.  There are a range of chilli peppers ranging from degrees of ‘hotness’ and flavour to being sweet and subtle.  It is well known that the ‘seeds’ inside chilli’s are the hottest part of the pepper, so if you just want flavour, take out the seeds before cooking.  Please remember to wash your hands thoroughly and not to touch your eyes or your mouth or private parts after handling chilli as this can bring about serious consequences.

There are a number of benefits to chilli’s, such as they stimulate circulation and discourage against blood clots, the also aid digestion and may also relieve pain, they are good for coughs and they speed up your metabolism as eating chillies makes the body heat up slightly which improves your metabolism and aids weight loss.

Therapeutic Qualities:
Chilli’s also have therapeutic qualities, they can increase your gastric acid which ensures there is enough acid to kill most bacteria in food and enable efficient digestion.

Have you noticed that when you hit a really hot chilli your eyes water and your nose runs?  This increases the bodies mucus flow and can help to clear congestion in the airways helping coughs and colds.

Cautions:
It has been known that the heavy use of chillies may increase the risk of stomach cancer.  Also, people with ulcers are not able to eat hot chillies as this aggravates the situation.
