Top 10 Foods To Aid Water Retention.

Does size matter when you are trying to lose weight?  This is one of the most commonest questions I get.  As a nutritionist, I can say that for losing weight quickly yes size does matter when you have more weight to lose.  The most important thing to remember is that for anyone who is more than 14 pounds overweight, the first thing you actually lose is water and not really fat.  The silliest thing is that the more water you drink, the more you lose.  So hence hydrating properly is very important in any diet.  Water not only breaks down fat, it also oxygenates the blood, and flushes the kidneys and liver so that your body does not work as hard getting rid of toxins and free radicals.

There are alot of fruit and vegetables that can help the body to release water here are a few diuretic foods you shouldn't live without:

1.  Celery  improves your appetite and has diuretic and laxative effects. It is good for people with a broken metabolism and fatigue.

2. Cucumbers great diuretic and also good for the body too, as you can use this on your skin.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar helps stabilize your levels of potassium, which can go out of balance with many other diuretics.

4. Tomatoes. Their high content of water causes the kidneys to release more fluids, which flushes the harmful things from the body much faster.

5. Water Melons or any type of melon can also help to release more fluids as it has a high water content.

6. Green Tea. The high caffeine level in green tea is what gives it diuretic properties. Coffee also serves a similar purpose as well.

7.Parsley is a really great diuretic and can be used in dry format or fresh herbs.

8. Garlic has also been known to improve water retention and also has other benefits such as heart health and the break down of fats within the body.

9. Pumpkin is an excellent diuretic. It contains salts of potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron, as well as sugar, carotene, fibre, protein and vitamins C, B1, B2, PP. Pumpkin seeds are well-known and are popular anthelmintic and have been used for generations to rid the body of worms.  Pumpkin is especially useful at heart and kidney diseases, obesity, cholecystitis, hypertension and constipation.

10. Cranberry juice can also aid in removal of excess fluid retention and is also useful for clearing any urinary tract infections.

So there you have it the top 10 natural fruits and vegetables that can aid weight loss or water retention naturally.  If you do decide to take water retention tablets, these should only be taken for a short period of time as there is a danger you will also flush away all the nutrients and vitamins the body needs to absorb.  Diuretics are also good for women who suffer from edema, PMS or bloating.

Your turn: Have you any unusual recipes using any of the above, either cakes, fruit juices or the like?  Fancy sharing those with us... just leave a comment below.

Scott's Weight Loss Stories
Scott Before and After Herbalife ShapeWorks Program. When the Hula Hoop got stuck around my middle, that was it. For Scott, the change came about when a friend put a Hula Hoop around him and he couldn't get it off. Scott knew that he had to lose a significant amount of weight.
I lost more than half my weight. Prior to discovering Herbalife products, Scott could not walk a block or bend over to tie his shoes because the pressure of his weight would become unbearable. Many suggested he undergo surgery to reduce his size, but Scott was reluctant to go to such extreme measures. Instead, he turned to Herbalife products.
Having tried every potion and powder, Scott believed that Herbalife’s nutritional ShapeWorks program would bring the change he was looking for. And indeed it was. Scott's old cravings have subsided and now he craves healthier foods. Scott also improved his exercise routine and is now very active and very happy.*
How Scott Did It:
  • Drink the nutritional shakes, twice a day.
  • Eat six times a day to keep your metabolism up (in smaller portions).
  • Drank as much water as he could.
  • Try taking herbal enhancers for faster results (Total Control, Snack Defense, Cell Activator, etc.).
  • Follow the Herbalife Success Guide.

Hit That Diet Plan Running

I have had enough of pussy footing around clients who want to lose weight, but either sabotage their diet plans, or come up with excuses not to eat properly or exercise right.

Far too often I get talking to someone who wants to 'lose a few pounds' and tone up their stomach area, but when you ask them what they have done about it so far.... nothing, nada, zilche!

So why is it when we want to lose weight we sabotage ourselves in eating the wrong foods or not putting ourselves out on the exercise trail.

First off, you need to change your mindset.  If you need to lose weight, then you need to focus on losing weight by having it in your thoughts 24/7... Ok, maybe not 24/7 but 80% of the time.

Everything that goes into your mouth, take time out to question.  How is this benefiting my weight loss plan? Am I really hungry? Is this the right thing to be eating right now?

Visualisation is another key aspect to staying on track.  See yourself as the person you want to become.  Keep that thought in your mind.  Athletes and sports people use this technique time and time again to help them stay on track and to win races.  They see themselves winning the race in their head, step by step and when they get out there on the track, its like deja vu.

Take baby steps into weight loss.  The worse thing you can do is to cut out everything that's bad for you at once.  So take it little by little. Start of with cutting one item of food per week. Where you can, I suggest replacing it with a healthier alternative.

I hope these quick tips help you get to where you are going in your weightloss program.

Weight Loss Yoga Moves

Hey Fit Girls and Guys out there.... I thought I would put out a yoga video to aid weight loss.

If you are unable to do any physical exercises due to your size or for medical reasons, then yoga is a gentle way to stretch your limbs and speed up your metabolism without over exerting yourself.  Take your time when doing any exercise especially if you are over weight or have not exercised for a while.

Always make sure you consult your physician before embarking on a change of diet, or exercise.

This is a great DVD of other exercise routines you can do to aid your weightloss.

Healthy Snacking Doesn’t Have To Be A Chore

So, your on a diet, it’s hard most snacks are now going to be out of range.  The gremlins strike and your stomach is craving fatty foods, sweets and chocolates.

Sound familiar?  Yep, been there done that and it only puts you on a back slider and in the doldrums.  So, apart from ensuring you are eating enough of the right calories, including enough proteins, then you shouldn’t have the sugar attacks.

I found a great website that can help you with swapping out bad snacks for good snacks.

You can also try out our Herbalife healthy snacks
·         Protein Bars in a range of flavours, Vanilla, Chocolate Peanut and Lemon
·         Tomato Soup
·         Soya Nuts (for those of you who are savoury snackers)
Go visit the store to find out more è http://healthyweightloss.herbalcoach.com

Personally, I love nuts and always have a bag of mixed unsalted nuts with raisins and dried fruit around.  As with any snack eat within limitation and don’t gorge yourself on them, they can be high on the old calorie front.

Yours in health

Why Weighing Yourself Is Not A Good Idea When Losing Weight

What!  Did you just read that correctly?  Yes, I said it weighing yourself not only brings you undue stress when you see that the scales have not moved since you started your program (all of two days ago… lol!) or they have moved, but the wrong way up instead of down.  Not only does this send out negative vibes to you and your psychi, but also can sabotage your diet program.

The scales are not a true indication of weight loss by any means.  More accurately would be to measure yourself on a more regular basis, because if you are losing inches then the  program is working for you. If you have been on the program for a while and then see that your weight has increased rather than decrease, then look into why this may be. Are you losing inches in the process? Have you started a weight training workout recently?  Remember that muscle is heavier than fat, and if you have started to work out, or go to the gym, then you may be putting on muscles which is a good thing, as muscle burns calories and will eventually burn fat!

Shaping up is really the key to weight loss and if you recognise the fact that your skirts and blouses are a little looser, and the waist line in your trousers seems to not look so tight, then your onto a winning streak.

Complacency however , does not have a place here.  Remember inch loss is the first part of any weight management campaign, because after inch lose the weight loss will inevitably happen.

Another thing to recognise is the fact that people who have three or more stone to lose will quickly shed weight at the beginning of any program, this is usually due to water retention and not as many would hope that the diet program is a successful one.  Any diet will work if followed, but what makes the difference is how sustainable is that diet going forward on a long term basis.

Make sure you are drinking lots of water, as water is key to helping you break down fat and improving the circulation and metabolism.  Increase your fibre content if you find you are not losing fat.  SO there you have it, do not keep jumping on the scales ever two days.  If you have to and can’t resist then make it every two weeks.

Go visit the store to find out more  http://healthyweightloss.herbalcoach.com

How Colourful Is Your Diet?

Dieting can be monotonous if we choose it to be.  Why not make it exciting. There are so many good recipes out there that are filled with low fat items, fresh produce and low in calories yet filling and exciting enough to enjoy and fill you up!g

I hate rabbit food!  And there is a mixed conception out there that if you are on a weight loss diet, you have to be eating salads, soups and not much else. Wrooooooooooong...

Basically, if you keep tabs on your portion sizes, type of foods that pass your lips and include activity in your program, and provided that calories 'in' or 'eaten'  is less than calories 'out' or used up, you have a formula for weight loss.

David Heber's book is brilliant.  No more worrying about what type of fruit or vegetable you should eat and how much of.  He even has a simple menu option you can follow.

Because each color category represents different nutrients and antioxidants, Heber suggests one serving from each color. A serving is defined as one cup raw fruits or vegetables or ½ cup cooked.

A week of menus for men and another for women provides suggestions for fitting in all the produce while limiting foods deemed off the menu. Detailed lists of each color group and recommended portion sizes make it easy to create your own menus. Recipes, shopping lists, travel, and dining out tips are included.

David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.N.
Professor Heber is included in the The Best Doctors in America and Who's Who in America.
Professor Heber's expertise has been featured many times in the media, including on NBC, CNN and Discovery Channel.
In addition to writing over 70 peer-reviewed scientific articles and two professional texts, he has also written books for the public: "Natural Remedies for a Healthy Heart," "The Resolution Diet," "What Color is Your Diet?" and his latest book - "The LA Shape Diet."
He directs the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Dietary Supplement Research in Botanicals, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) - funded Clinical Nutrition Research Unit and the NIH Nutrition and Obesity Training Grants at UCLA.
Professor Heber's main research interests are obesity treatment and nutrition for cancer prevention and treatment. He is the Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles*.
Professor Heber holds a B.S. in Chemistry, Magna Cum Laude, UCLA, 1969; M.D. Harvard Medical School, 1973; and Ph.D. in Physiology, University of California, 1978. Diet Tips To Aid Your Weightloss

  • Eat Slowly and enjoy your food. Do not skip meals or shakes! Skipping meals can result in headaches or binge eating.

  • Drink at least 8 glasses (64 ounces) of plain, fresh water daily. This is in addition to other liquids you drink which may include low calorie beverages like herbal teas, decaffeinated coffee or diet sodas. Not drinking enough fluid can lead to dehydration, a common cause of headaches. Keep in mind that alcoholic beverages and fruit juices are high in calories and if used in excess can sabotage your weight loss effort.

  • Keep high-calorie sweets and desserts (like cake, cookies, ice cream, and dried fruits) as well as fried and fatty foods out of the house. Also avoid products made with white flour such as white bread, rice and pasta even low-fat or non-fat cookies.

  • Eat plenty of high-fiber foods including a minimum of 2 cups of garden salad daily along with plenty of dark green and yellow vegetables. Snack on fresh vegetable sticks. Also include 1-2 pieces of fresh fruit daily as snacks. Fiber promotes a natural, healthy colon.

  • For your main meal, starchy servings should include whole grain, complex carbohydrates such as whole-grain breads and pasta, brown rice, corn, potatoes, beans and lentils.

  • Season your foods with herbs, garlic, pepper, vinegar or lemon rather than salt. Avoid high-sodium soups, frozen entrees and vegetable juices.

  • Weigh and take measurements only one time per week. Body weight can fluctuate on a daily basis, so frequent weighing and measuring can lead to unwarranted frustration.

  • Use the Weight Management Programs to lose weight and to maintain your desired weight. Refer to this post if you find yourself gaining back weight or returning to poor eating habits, or contact Colette on the email below. :)
