Technology is advancing through sport science and exercise medicine and the "Powerplate" (also described as "vibrostation", "toning plates", "vibraxis", "exercise plates", "bodyshaker exercise fitness plates" and many more combinations of the these words), is one of the newest creations to emerge from this growing wealth of knowledge applied to the fitness industry.
What do they do?
These high-tech pieces of equipment transmit waves of energy throughout the body, making muscle fibres contraction between 25 and 50 times per second, enhancing the co-ordination and efficiency of both muscles and nerves in the body.
The vibrations essentially create instability that forces the body to respond with multi-directional contractions as a counter balance and this type of complex reaction is what is required within everyday life. This is essentially a more powerful version of already established "stabilisation" equipment, such as fit balls, (also termed Swiss or exercise balls), Bosu's, Dyna discs, ½ foam rolls and Reebok core boards.
With all of these exercise modalities the underlying principles are the same:
- That the instability created, forces activation, (switching on), of additional nervous tissue and muscle fibres including the 'core' musculature. The more muscle you "switch on" the more is available to tone and burn calories.
The instability enhances the flexibility and strength of the tendons and ligaments around joints, unlike most traditional exercise, which makes people stronger and more aware of there own body, reducing the risks of injury.
This is a real breakthrough in training and conditioning as we can now optimally "load" the human frame while minimizing high impact, high load, and high stress factors. As we can maximise involvement of the body as a whole, without necessarily going through great ranges or even any movement, it provides a powerful tool in the areas of rehabilitation and exercise prescription for those with medical conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's Disease.
What are the benefits?
Actual scientific medical research evidence for many of the benefits for vibration technology exsists with many of the actual academic literature avaliable on sites like www.powerplate.com/EN/technology/.
Benefits include:
Immediate improvements in blood circulation
Increased muscle strength and flexibility
Increased joint range of motions
Decreased cellulite
Increased bone mineral density
Reduced pain and soreness
Faster recovery and regenration from injury and training, (research support includes Moezy et al (2008), that indicated enhanced recovery from anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery using vibration technology during rehabilitation)
Enhanced metabolism and lymphatic flow and reductions in cortisol (which is a stress hormone)
Little impact on the joints and ligaments
Capacity for whole body massage and relaxation
Increases the production of collagen to encourage firmer, smoother skin
Helps prevent age-related muscle loss, bone density loss and skin wrinkles
People with medical conitions can exercise while working wothin their personal physcial limitations
Helps prevent injuries through enhanced propriceptive awareness and control
My View
The marketing on these vibration machines is generally misleading as the benefits are glorified with slogans such as "the 10 minute workout".
What is important to remember is that 10 minutes on a powerplate is not sufficient to replace other forms of exercise and its intergration into exsiting exercise plans should be viewed as an alternative for variation rather than a sole subsitiute.
I personally rate vibration technology because the power of these machines for rehabilitation, muscle massage and relaxation are phenomenal and together with an opportunity for escapism from 'traditional' exercise, I think these will continue to grow in popularity and avaliablity.
It is however, important that we remain critical, (perhaps even sceptical), with all 'new' technology, discoveries and theories as what we know at any given time may, in the future be shown to be wrong, (the "benefits" of smoking for example!), therefore it is worth considering the following:
There are minimal cardiovascular benefits with the powerplate and although improvements in body tone and flexibility are easily achiveved, siginificant improvements in stamina of your heart and lungs will be limited.
The cost is an issue - with 'new' technology comes an expensive new price tag with top of the range models costing around £7000. There are brands that are avaliable for less but with reduced price comes reduced durability, economic function and plate size and subsequently reduced vibration options. There are becoming increasingly avaliable in health clubs.
If you get one at home, be prepared as they are not the sort of equipment you can hide away, or just get out of the cupboard eveytime you want to use it. It would require a designated space at home if you were to purchase a personal one.
The research into the extent of contra-indications and potential issues from long-term use of vibration technology are very limited as the machines are so new. It is for this reason that I am particularly cautious about the volume and duration of use with my clients and therefore only phase its use in to their training schedules for select periods of time. It may be possible to overuse this subtly powerful method of training and it is recommended that people don't exceed 10minutes of vibration per workout and ideally not more than 3 times a week (avoid consecutive days).
As mentioned already, it is not an all-round solution and it is wise to avoid the misunderstanding that it can replace traditional exercise. It is handy for those who want a quick workout, but the best solutions are found in combining it with other forms of exercise.
You need to start gradually by increasing the frequency slowely and make sure you stand correctly in order to optimise the benefits and ensure safe biomechanics.
Try to choose a combination of compound exercises, (big muscle group exercises like squats or push-ups) and isolation exercises, (that focus on single muscles, i.e. bicep curls and front raises). This will increase the caloire burning potential of the workout.
It is easy to forget but make sure you drink enough water, as your muscles will be contracting 30-50 times more quickly, thereby generating a lot of internal heat and subsequently increasing the likelhood of dehydration.
Just a note of safety. You should consult a physican/exercise professional before beginning any exercise program, including one involving the use of a power plate machine. If you want more information and instruction regarding the use of a powerplate, one of the best sources is powerplate.com.

Feeding Season Has Arrived!
Lol!
November is that time of year when many festivities are about to being. SOme of my friends have just celebrated Eid, and Diwali where lots of lovely rich foods are prepared for the celebrations.
Soon we will be coming up to Thanksgiving for those of you in the USA, and then Christmas parties and the big event itself in December.
So, it's right about this time, that I go on a quick diet to lose a few pounds in preparation of gaining them back over the celebration season.
If you keep it simple and watch your portion sizes, go for walks then the pounds will stay off.
Walking in the cold is a great way to lose pounds. Your body has to burn up more energy to keep you warm, therefore more of your stored body fat is used!
Do I hear light bulbs going on... lol!
Make it fun, join in with the dancing and games, this will get the pounds shifting in a fun way.
Enjoy the partying season and watch our for more on our blog...

Could You Have Male Eating Disorder
If you think eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are just a chick thing, guess again. Ask yourself these six questions to make sure your eating and exercise patterns are in a healthy zone.
Cathy Garrard
When the subject of eating disorders comes up, most people naturally think it’s a chick thing. But the latest research shows that gender is neither a predictor of—or an insurance policy against—body image issues. In fact, the number of guys worldwide who suffer from eating disorders is on the rise, according to Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment & Prevention.
“There’s a lot more pressure these days for guys to have a cut body than there used to be in the past,” says Ted Weltzin, MD, medical director of eating disorder services at Rogers Memorial Hospital in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.

Diets Don't Work
Honestly, how many times have you heard that statement? The reality is, it's how you approach the thing in the first place.
As soon as you mention the word diet, it's out... you have already set yourself up on thinking that there's a load of restricted foods you can't eat. Why is this... it's about what goes in and what comes out....
By coming out, I mean calories in and calories out...
Exercise is key here. If we dont do enough, but eat too much, guess what! The weight piles on or doesn't shift.
So not only can we continue to eat the foods we eat, we have to look at the portion sizes and the calories and fat, protein, carbohydrate, salt and sugar contents.
Yes, there may be a few things we need to cut down on eating, but not necessarily cut out. Let's face it we need good and bad fats, so the myth that some foods are bad for us period, are just that.... myths. As long as we control and monitor what it is we are eating, then we can eat what we like.
I know there are mixed studies out there, but let us look at the human body, it is built in a certain way. Our digestives systems are built to work in a specific way, but the thing is we tend to overload it by eating alot of the wrong foods at the same time....
People have said that if we followed the 'cave man' diet, or the pre- 1942 world war 1 diet, that we would all be more healthy, fact is those diets were about rationing the portion size and looking at what was wholesome and provided energy for us to function on a daily basis. There were no processed foods, or sugary foods at those times, and this is the difference we face in todays times.
The fact that we have 'convenience foods', 'fast foods', foods without any nutritional value, but full of calories just the same. What you have to recognise if you wish to improve your health is that reading your food labels is key to understanding and knowing what you are putting into your mouth!
More on food labelling to come....

To your dieting success!

Early Morning Routine
Woke up super early this morning and had it in my head that I would go to the gym.
So I jumped out of bed, got my stiff together and got in the car.
Got there for 6.30am. At the gym I was surprised to see quite a few others there already working out.
I did a quick 10 minutes in the cross training machine, 5 minutes
rowing and 15minutes doing various weight bearing exercises.
After a shower I felt a lot more energised and am ready to start my day 'full of beans'
Working out no matter what the of day always leave you energised. It gets the heart pumping and the blood flowing. Oxygen is moving more freely around the body improving circulation.
Exercising helps improve your blood pressure and I am sure there are a multitude of other benefits.
If you are busy just like me then getting up a little bit earlier to do done exercise whether its walking, running, skipping or the gym, get pumping!
Looking forward to the rest of my day, hope you all enjoy yours :)

October Gym Song Hits
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The Top 10 Workout Songs For October
Fort Wayne, IN – October 1, 2012 –
This month's top 10 list should have a little something for everybody.
It's got a song you hear everywhere (from PSY), a comeback single (from Christina Aguilera), and a wildcard country track (from Dierks Bentley).
There's also a crossover hit (“Only the Horses”) and a song popularized by a Kia commercial (“In My Mind”).Lastly, there's Dragonette with the month's number one track.
The group isn't a household name, and the song's not from the Top 40—which means it had to top the chart the old-fashioned way: through sheer awesomeness.
Here's the full list, according to votes placed at Run Hundred--the web's most popular workout music blog.
10. Dragonette - Let It Go - 131 BPM
9. Christina Aguilera - Your Body - 104 BPM
8. OneRepublic - Feel Again - 70 BPM
7. Dierks Bentley - 5-1-5-0 - 118 BPM
6. PSY - Gangnam Style - 134 BPM
5. Maroon 5 - One More Night - 93 BPM
4. Scissor Sisters - Only The Horses - 127 BPM

5 Reasons You Need to Cross-Train
Maybe
you've just started out on your fitness journey, or maybe you've been working
out for years.
You've either just started to figure out what works well for
your body, or you're still rocking that tried and true routine that has kept
your body fit for some time now. You've gotten into a nice groove with your
workouts.
You get in and you get out quickly, putting in your sweat equity and
checking off another task on the old to-do list for the day.
Here's
the trouble: You're in a rut. Maybe you don't even know it. Even if you're not
mentally tired of the routine you've created, your body is almost certainly
physically tired of it.
You just may have missed the signs: You're not losing
weight any more. You're not building muscle mass. You're not improving on your
speed or your distance when you work out.
It's
time to add some cross-training into your routine. Here's what cross-training
can do for you:
Challenge Your Body
When
you keep doing the same old exercises day in and day out, your body starts to
adapt. Your muscles learn the routine relatively quickly. They stop being
challenged by it, and that means that they stop developing.
In
order to make your body stronger, more flexible, and better able to endure long
periods of hard work, you have to constantly challenge your muscles. Doing
different exercises helps to challenge your muscles by subjecting them to
different movements or to variations in intensity.
Works Out New Muscles
It's
a no-brainer : Different exercises work out different parts of your body. You
can't do bicep curls everyday and then wonder why your hamstrings are weak.
Cross-training allows you to work out different muscles so that you can develop
your whole body and create muscle balance.
Trying
new exercises can help you to work out muscles you didn't even know were there.
One reason is that new exercises activate stabilizing muscles, helping you to
get a total body workout.
Lowers Risk of Injury
When
you strengthen more muscles throughout your body and improve your flexibility
through cross-training, you also lower your risk of injury. Your body is used
to performing a variety of movements, helping it to adapt to a diverse range of
experiences. Cross-training allows your body to become stronger and better capable
of handling change -- thereby reducing your risk of injury.
Improves Performance
When
your body is stronger and better capable of adapting to new situations, it
performs better in a variety of exercises. Cycling improves your endurance for
running. Strength training improves your stroke in swimming. Yoga improves your
flexibility for cycling. Cross-training has a cyclical nature that helps your
body to become stronger, faster, and more efficient no matter the workout you
choose.
Breaks Up the Monotony
Let's
face it: Working out can be plain out tedious sometimes. It can be hard to face
another three miles on the treadmill -- staring ahead at the wall or watching
reruns on the TV. Even a heart-pounding zumba class can start to seem old-hat
when you know all the steps already.
Cross-training
provides you with a variety of exercises so that you don't become bored with
doing the same thing all the time.
When you aren't excited by exercise, it can
make it harder (if not impossible) to get to the gym. Finding ways to make
exercise fresh and fun is vital to your long-term fitness success.
Cross-training
isn't just for elite athletes. Everyone should incorporate it into their
workouts to help keep their body in top shape, reduce the risk of injury, and
keep exercise interesting.

do you do to cross-train? Share your routines in the comments!

It is official! 2day Fasting Can Improve Your Health
A few weeks ago I was watching a program on the telly about the effects of fasting and there were some truly intriguing findings.
Here is a clip I found where Dr Krista A Varady shares her research,Michael Mosley presents from the documentary Eat,fast and live longer
Fascinating BBC Horizon video on how fasting may prevent a host of age related diseases in later life diabetes, cancers, heart disease high blood pressure and diseases of the brain such as dementia.
I have started the 2 day fast at weekends and at find that if I keep myself busy its something I can do comfortably.
In any case I have since found that you can eat through the day but only upto 500 calories if your a woman and 600 if you are a man.
If you are going to do this type of fasting, then check with your GP first, and make sure you have proper guidance to doing this in the first instance.
Here are some links I found on the net..

*** GUEST POST *** Aerial circus – What’s all the hype about?
Aerial circus is taking the nation by storm
at the moment as the latest way to get fit, tone up, and have a really
fantastic time while you’re at it! If you’ve been looking to add a little spice
to your workout regime but are lacking inspiration.
The team at Poleista a new aerial circus and pole blog
have put together a raft of info to help you decide whether aerial circus might
be something that will help you to achieve the results that you’ve been
dreaming of.
Aerial circus is taking the nation by storm at the moment as the latest way to get fit, tone up, and have a really fantastic time while you’re at it! If you’ve been looking to add a little spice to your workout regime but are lacking inspiration.
What are the benefits?
We all lead busy lifestyles, so it’s important that we choose a type of
exercise that will reap the rewards. Thankfully, aerial circus really delivers.
It provides a full body workout that can improve core strength and flexibility
while also burning calories. Aerial circus is a great confidence booster too,
and beginners often find that their newfound skills translate into all areas of
their lives. Of course, part of this is probably due to their sexy new figures!
So what exactly is aerial circus?
In the most basic of terms, aerial arts involve performing aerobic
style moves while suspended in mid-air. Cirque du Soleil are famous
for their dazzling aerial circus performances the world over. There are several
different types that all involve the use of different apparatus. They’re a true
art form that requires grace, skill and dedication, though even the most unfit
of beginners are welcome at classes. Even if you doubt your credentials in
these areas, a class will soon make you change your mind!
What are the different types of aerial art?
Here, we'll take a look at a few of the various types of aerial art
that you can choose from.
Aerial hoop
Aerial hoop is probably the most well-known of all the aerial arts, and
involves using a large metal hoop which is suspended from the ceiling. A beginners’
class will cover the basics of getting up and down from the hoop and then how
to spin. Once this has been mastered, the class will move onto more advanced
manoeuvres involving performance skills and technique. Aerial hoop is also
often called lyra or cerceau.
Static trapeze
A suspended metal bar is the equipment of choice for those practising
static trapeze. The equipment stays completely still while the artist performs
tricks and moves. Beginners will start by learning how to get on and off the
trapeze, and then progress to more advanced movements and techniques.
Spanish web
Spanish web involves the artists climbing a rope which they can then
use to perform a range of tricks and moves. The apparatus includes a loop at
the very top of the rope, which students can use to lock their wrists into to
allow a wider range of positions to be achieved. A class will involve learning
very basic poses and some climbing techniques.
Aerial tissu
Tissu, also known as silk, is a fabric apparatus that performers use to
climb and wrap their bodies around. Beginners will start by learning how to
climb the silks and carry out basic poses. Eventually, the moves will require
greater strength and skill.
How can I get started?
The best way to get started with your chosen aerial art is to sign up
for a beginners’ class in your local area. Pick one that is appropriate to your
current skill level and just turn up!
What can I expect from my first class?
Aerial arts classes start with a warm-up that incorporates your chosen
apparatus to get your body ready for the session. You will then be introduced to
some basic moves before slowly moving on to more advanced techniques. Classes
tend be very friendly and supportive places, so you’re likely to even make a
few new friends while you’re there.
Aerial arts provide a great workout opportunity for anyone who’s looking
for something a little bit out of the ordinary. It might just take one class
for you to be hooked!
Todays Guest Post is by Carolyn Jones who writes for a new aerial and pole fitness site called poleista.co.uk
